Cigarette sparked fire at American Legion
[2/15/2008] - Fire broke out inside the Farmington American Legion early Sunday morning after a cigarette discarded in a return air vent sparked a flame.
About 20 people were safely evacuated at about 1:10 a.m. after the restaurant and bar closed.
Volunteer firefighters took down the fire in temperatures that hovered near zero.
Tim Pietsch, Farmington fire chief, led the volunteer fire department staff along with members of the Rosemount Fire Department.
“There was fire coming out of the vents and the electrical sockets” Pietsch said. “The sprinkler system worked well and saved the building. It went off and really helped.” “The fire started in a cold air return vent from the heating system from a discarded cigarette,” said John Powers, Farmington fire marshal.

Corinth downtown reconstruction effort likely to include fire safety considerations
[2/15/2008] - CORINTH — As officials in Corinth deal with a fire that gutted their burgeoning and historic commercial corridor on Main Street this week, they may want to consider the example found in Montpelier, Vt. — where buildings destroyed in a similar blaze have yet to be replaced more than four years later.
When Montpelier lost a pair of prominent downtown structures — both listed on the National Register of Historic Places — to an electrical fire in May 2003, city officials decided they’d had enough.
Installing sprinklers, they said, was a preventative step worth taking.

Relatives of fallen firefighters, victims call for sprinkler bill
[2/5/2008] - COLUMBIA, S.C. --Mothers grieving children lost in an October beach house fire and widows of Charleston firefighters killed at a June furniture store asked on Tuesday for legislation that would put sprinkler systems in more South Carolina buildings.
Lauren Mulkey said that her husband, Capt. Louis Mulkey, died the day after their first wedding anniversary in the fire at the Sofa Super Store.
"What I can tell you is that not a day goes by that I don't wonder, what if there were sprinklers," Mulkey told a Senate panel considering the bill. "Perhaps it will help someone else. But it certainly won't allow another 25-year-old to become a widow."
